Wool prices at today’s North Island sale were marginally cheaper compared to our last sale. The exception to this was the offering of 1st lambs which were heavily discounted and were 5 – 10% cheaper. It should be noted these lambs were of average to poor quality with most containing VM (vegetable matter) and had high Y-Z colour readings. It appears a number of growers have delayed lamb shearing this season and this is being reflected in the poorer quality. Covid19 continues to negatively affect demand, especially in India, where it is reported the factories are open but are on low or no production due to lack of healthy staff. One positive is strong demand from Europe for the good quality well prepared second shears. Generally, these shears need to be VM free so it is important for growers to remove the wigs and keep these separate, even from the B&P.
