C48 – Wool Sale – 28 May 2020

After 10 weeks with no South Island wool sales and the world economies being turned upside down, wool prices have not escaped the uncertainty. With exporters reporting major issues with renegotiating of contracts and delayed shipments, today's wool sale suffered, with prices firm to slightly cheaper compared to last weeks North Island sale which was up to 25% cheaper compared to the last sale pre-lockdown. We are in very rough waters, which no-one in the industry has ever experienced before. Clearing the backlog of wool is going to be a challenge with passings creeping up and growers holding wool. With overseas processors functioning on limited capacity and deciding what requirements they need going forward, the wool market may be at this level for sometime.
